Sometimes you just gotta go…

As several of you know, I come from more of a road course background when it comes to motorsports. This made for an interesting weekend following SEMA.
Last week after SEMA finished (literally minutes) I started to get random calls from friends about a West Coast Lotus Club meet going on out here. A couple friends called saying they were coming in from out of town to run in the event while others were calling to tell me they were instructing for the event. I even recieved a call from another friend telling me they were going to be doing a photo shoot for Ferrari Club of Las Vegas for their annual exotics calender.
At this point I think I can take the hint to head out to the track at Spring Mountain Motorsports Ranch in Pahrump, NV.
I get there and begin to make my rounds checking up on friends that are running & meeting new people that have finally decided to make use of the toys they were so eager to own. Besides the Lotus & Ferrari groups being there there were many other exotics in attendance as well as a small handful of tuner cars.
At this point I head to the upper paddock area. You can see most of the 2.2mile configuration they were running that day and they also happend to be doing the calender photo shoot up there. Between the high desert backdrop, exotic cars everywhere and models running back & forth this was looking like the good place to be hanging out for a gearhead trying to give themself ADD. Everything is going full bore for the next few hours. With cars on track as the backdrop, lines of exotics wait to have models photographed with them until the calendar people feel they have enough shots.
Cars are still running on the track and some of the photographers & models want to keep going. I see Mike Le Putt from Trackday.net and he asks if it’s cool to get some shots of the car. “Of course it’s okay!” I tell him. We grab a few models & he gets started. I gotta say Mike’s quite the professional.
All in all not a bad day. These guys are all just a bunch of gear heads just like us. I was quite suprized that most of them (people there that I didn’t know) were just as interested in my beat up drift/road car as most people are in their exotic cars.
Next time you go to watch someone elses event (drift, road course, drag, etc.) or even if you’re participating in one yourself don’t hesitate to talk to people. Even if they don’t do the exact same thing you do, you may be suprized how much alike you really may be. Who knows, you might just end up getting a photo shoot out of it.
