s14 issues
« on: March 06, 2012, 06:51:24 AM »
I need some help. I recently bought a motor that I was told was good from a shop to put in my car. I installed it and connected everything the way its supposed to be and the car is all put back together, but the car wont start. The horn works and the head lights work and that's it. Now i know the battery is bad and that could be the issue, but I wanted to get some other opinions before I buy a new one. I tried to bump start the car and it seemed like it wanted to start but it didn't. So if anyone has any idea of what it could be, or if someone who knows a good amount about s14s could come check it out I'd appreciate it. Let me know guys. Thanks.

Well if you say your battery is bad replace it first. Then work from there, It could be the root cause or just be 1 of the problems unless you eliminate problems you know it would be difficult to find out why things don't happen.

check your grounds, there are a total of 4 on the engine bay harness alone on an s13, im not sure if its similar to a s14. i know for a fact that one bad ground on the harness will cause a no start, but 12v to the starter.

for reals, check all the basic/simple stuff first. These thing require the least effort and are more likely to be causative in this situation. If you experience difficulty with that, im sure a shop can assist you.

Take the starter out and check to see if its hitting the flywheel

It sounds like its locked up dude were did you get the motor did it come from a running car

Hopefully its just valve train lock you might get lucky and you might be able to save it

Other than that I know if I come out there and look at it it always leads to bad news lol

Dose the engine spin?
If you go to the BIG BOLT (Crank bolt) in the front and spin it if it dosn't or dose take the starter off and go to Orelly's or Autozone and have it check if its bad you know what to do.

these are steps to getting you car running. i personaly cant go over and help due to school i would love to help you out but i can't.

If you can't spin it and you took the starter off try and spinn it again if you lose ok or if it stuck try seeing if you gear box is in gear.

then if it isnt in gear and the engin isn't turning did you check the engine out befor installing it.

thats all i can think of right now. there are lots of steps befor you install an engine and during and after.

^^^ Word. But did you check if you have a properly powered and grounded starter? You may just be hearing the starter solenoid which is powered by ignition but you still need a strong 12 volt source with good amperage to crank the car over. I hope the engine isn't siezed man, good luck!

Like I said, I just bought a new battery and that didn't fix anything. And I know the starter is good because it's the same one that was in the car before. Also the only other things that work besides the starter solenoid, is the fuel pump, horn, and headlights. Nothing else electronic works. No gauges, no dome lights, and I haven't put my radio deck face on, but I'm pretty sure that wouldn't work either.

Ok so your having a power distribution problem if your not getting any power to your cluster and dome light's. But your getting power to everything else, look at the harness and disconnect and inspect the pins look for corrosions and bent pins.

Next look at the grounds chassie, engines, head (I've never had a 240 so there might not be one for the head) you did this swap make sure you haven't left out anything. Also make sure your ecu is grounded as well if you messed with it.

The starter ground should be where it bolts in if your starter work before then OK. Was it easy for you to install the starter or was it hard.

And if the engine turned before you installed it?

And before you check any of the connectors remove your batt from the circuit

OK so I'm pretty sure the starter is the reason the car wont start, but i still don't know why all the electronic shit doesn't work, the horn and headlights work, but no windows, no dome lights, no gauges, no tail lights reverse lights or brake lights, no radio. Need some suggestions guys.
