RACING AT NELLIS: Drifting down the flightline

Story From The Las Vegas “View” Published on Oct 14th 2009

Cars converged on the Nellis Air Force Base flightline for a motor sport event that included a car show, cars drifting in a mile shoot-out and driving in an autocross, Sept. 27-28.

Drifting, a racing style with origins in Japan, features drivers skidding rear tires at top speeds in the turns as they maintain vehicle control. Winning isn’t about crossing a finish line. It’s more about style than speed.

Event sponsors included Vegas Drift, the Sports Car Club of America and United Services Automobile Association.

VegasDrift 007 – Wrap-Up & Gallery

Photos and Story by Jacob Leveton

VegasDrift produced their 7th event on base at the Nellis Air Force location just north of Las Vegas, NV. The event drew more than 50 drivers despite the triple-digit heat, including FD drivers Tommy Suell, Patrick Mordaunt, and Forrest Wang. The event was a huge success, with several Air Force personnel getting ride alongs with the top drivers throughout the day.

We enjoyed getting back to a grassroots drifting event where there’s no scores or awards. The staff and facilities at Nellis were top notch, and the Vegas Drift staff went out of their way to ensure all drivers at the event enjoyed themselves. Many packed up their cars early from a shortage of tires or just sheer physical exhaustion.

If you’re in the area for the next Vegas Drift event in November, be sure to check it out! Click the photo or click here for the full gallery.
